In 2016, a small group of dedicated and passionate community members joined together with the goal of bringing Hospice Care to Norwood and the surrounding communities after noticing the need for more support for rural individuals and families affected by life-limiting illness and grief.

The group formed a Board of Directors and did research including visiting other Hospices in the province to determine what was needed.

The family of JJ Stewart generously donated the original family home on Highway 7 that has now become the heart of Hospice Norwood - Stewart House. The community then raised money which allowed for renovations to make the space warm, safe and accessible to all.

In 2023, the Ontario Government assisted by providing funding for a ramp and the make the washroom fully accessible.

Our hope for the future is to build a new wing with a 2 bed Hospice residence where people will be able to receive care in their last days or weeks of life.

Volunteers continue to remain the foundation of Hospice Norwood. All volunteers who serve clients are screened and participate in a 30 hour training program.

In 2023, Hospice Norwood and Hospice Peterborough entered into a partnership to offer programming in Norwood. Programming is available to clients with a life-threatening illness, caregivers and people experiencing grief related to the death of a close loved one.

Hospice Norwood is passionate about our vision of delivering hospice care to Norwood and surrounding communities. Please feel free to reach out to access programming or to join us in achieving this vision.

Our Goal

To provide compassionate care in our rural community for those living with life-limiting illnesses while offering a support system for those caring for loved ones and those experiencing grief and loss.

DID YOU KNOW?

Only 16% to 30% of all Canadians who die currently have access to or receive Hospice palliative and end-of-life care services

Canadian families frequently shoulder 25% of the total costs of palliative care due to costs associated with home based services such as nursing and personal care services

When asked, most poeple have indicated that they would prefer to die at home in the presence of loved ones, yet almost 70% of Canadian deaths occur in a hospital.

Hospice palliative care programs allow patients to gain more control over their lives, and manage pain and symptons more effectively.

What is Hospice?

A community-based residential Hospice is different than care in a hospital.

A Hospice facility provides compassionate family-centred end-of-life care with expert medical attention, emotional comfort, spiritual support and pain management 24 hours a day by highly qualified health care professionals and trained volunteers at no cost.

The main objective of Hospice care is helping patients and family focus on what matters most.

For many, it will provide support to and relieve family and friends from caregiving to spending quality time with their loved one.
